Winter Mini Scenes

Then in keeping with the winter theme  - along comes Christmas.
So one must paint some Christmas scenes - just for fun!

Collection of 4x6" and 5x7" scenes.
Oil on Canvas board.

Snow at O'Hara

Winter of course prompts one to do winter paintings.
"Snow at O'Hara"  is what happened.

Deep Cove

Terri requested this painting some time ago whilst we were taking night  pictures overlooking Deep Cove.
I had a large canvas 28" by 40" or something like that,  given to me and it needed a picture on it.
Once I started on the background there was no stopping me, I became fixated with the lights, and the sunset's glow on the water.  Using just the right colors to create the distant blacks was very tricky.

My first commissioned painting - price - free.

A PRETTY LADY

A couple of months ago I attended a portrait painting demonstration by a local artist, Zwany van Gust - she is a very good artist - trained in Holland.

Zwany paints in acrylics and I in oil, so instead of painting her examples I decided to paint my own example using her technique and tips.  That is how the "pretty lady" happened.
I hope she likes herself - I like her.
( I got a lot of glare on the photograph, even though I didn't use a flash - grrrr!)

Reflecting

Over the summer I was given the opportunity to enter a show at the Chilliwack Museum.
Having recently visited the Burnaby Museum, I decided to check the pictures I took there for inspiration as the show was entitled "Memories"
I used my picture of a "display" home from way back, deleted some clutter (museum artifacts) added the little boy's face reflecting in the mirror as he peeks in awe into the window.
It was a fun painting.

The play of light and reflections on water is always a fascination.
Capturing it plus the movement in the water was quite a challenge.
I'm happy with the result  . . .  and the painting is sold to a good
home.

Spring brought  some foggy and frosty early mornings.
Which is what inspired the picture below.

It has been a busy summer, alas it's over now and already I miss it.
Now I really must do some new posting!
Will get at it ASAP!

Opps I just about forgot about this one!

This is painting is of a Hawaiian Monk seal, that we were sooo lucky to have greet us on our first morning while visiting Maui this winter.  (sooo lucky because this is an endangered species)
He/she just took advantage of the surf and rode it right up onto the beach and then settled down for a nice nap in the sun.
Painting the surf was quite a challenge but fun!
And it gives the picture life!

Sure sign of spring, crocuses and bees!

I took a few pictures of my crocuses (ok this was a couple of months ago) and the bees were buzzing about,  so I was trying to get a shot of the bees on the flowers, usually to no avail, the bee would be gone by the time the camera clicked or so I thought.
Then when I put the pictures on the computer and this one popped up,  . .  very lucky shot! Just had to paint it!

. . . and here are a few new things!

Both of the following pictures were inspired by photos shared with me,  once I saw the photos,  I knew I had to paint them!  Once I started I was possessed and I'm pleased with my accomplishment!
I hope you will like them too!

Quilt Still in the Making

After hours of happy sewing the quilt is coming along, very nicely.
All thats still needed now, is the edging (finishing) and it'll be done.
Notice there is still wool left and yes there is still fabric left too!
. . so another quilt must be considered!

Maui Morning

A bit of a vacation to Maui inspired this painting.

Apres Ski Time

Apres Ski Time is finally completed.
Sadly, it doesn't photograph too well, guess I have more things to learn.
It is really much more vibrant in reality.

Radiant Rhodie

This is my personal favorite as far as flowers go.
(to date)
I did it a couple of years ago already, but it's still my #1!

Rain Refreshed

This was sort of a "design as I go" painting, the sheep were an
after thought, but they were the "fun"  part.
(sadly this picture did not photograph well,
 it is actually much brighter)

Tulips

Not too much longer and we should be seeing these around!

Patchwork Quilt in the "making"

Winter gets a person into creating warm things.
And ya, wool quilts are warm.
This quilt when it is done  . .  consists of 800+  5" squares
each of which is made up of  approximately 9 squares.
The fabrics have been collected for many years, ( eg 30+)
of sewing.
There is a bit of "memories" in each square.
My goal is for it to be reminder of days gone by, plus
 serve a useful function.

Scroll to the bottom picture and then up,  to see how
the mess of squares were rearranged to create
a generally pleasing appearance (in my view).
. . .  now on to sewing all the bits together, then adding
wool batting and "quilting" it.
 . . . .It may be quite a while to completion . . .
will post once done.

1st Snow drops of 2012

This is a sure sign that spring is happening . .  beware
there may still be "bumps" along the way.

Grrrr! It's cold out here!

Poor little bear is suffering from the winter's chill - he is not happy!

Cardinal

Winter can be dreary but this picture gives it a bit of warmth.

Ski Hill Picture - in progress

With skiing still fresh in my mind, I decided to do something related to skiing . . .
so here it is .  . .  evolving.

Moving right along towards completion, watch for the finished project.

This also is a study of a painting by D.R.Laird done under the guidance of Dawn Karr.
A favorite of most of my guests (visitors).
This painting is "spoken for" but I'm not ready to give it up.

This picture is a study of the same painting by D.R.Laird, done with the guidance and instruction of Dawn Karr.
Dawn Karr a local art instructor has taught me sooo much!
Painting was always an ambition, but Dawn taught me how to paint.
Thank you Dawn.
